When I say balance, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

For many, it’s balancing work with life.

We look to achieve an appropriate amount of time in each area.

Some call it balance.

Others use integration or harmony.

Often, conversations about efficiency and productivity fall into the same conversation.

So does “being super busy”.

My Perspective

As I’ve been reading and writing more on the topic, I have a new twist on balance.

I’m starting to see something another type of balance outside of work-life… or maybe tied to it.

Something on the other side of the seesaw from efficiency and productivity.

Creativity and Innovation.

Our busy lives don’t leave room for creativity and innovation.

Creativity and innovation in both our work and our personal lives.

These things can’t be “scheduled into our day”.

They need space, serendipity, and spontaneity for seeds of ideas to germinate and grow.

We need to find ways to balance our lean in and lean back time.

Find space to allow our minds to wander.

The next time someone asks, “How was your week?”, would you rather answer “busy” or “creative”?

I know which one I would choose.

Many say their best ideas come in the shower or on the commute.

I wonder why….

These are the only times they aren’t actively working on something else.

Your Turn

Do you find time for spontaneity and creativity in your days?

Are there activities you do that seem to be gardens for ideas?

How could you find more space in your day to lean back and let your mind wander?
