From the minute I rented my first apartment, I was excited about decorating.

Moving from apartments to homes (each slightly bigger), decorating was a challenge.

I wanted my home to look great but didn’t know how.

From the big things, like statement pieces, to the little ones, like holiday decorations.

Every choice, every purchase, was a challenge.

Colors, layout, accessories, the decisions often paralyzed me from doing anything.

Slowly, over the years, I learned.

Little rules and techniques.

Where to spend and where to save.

How to focus my efforts.

Make an impact.

For me, decorating is never complete.

One space finished = another one “up next”.

The good news is that I now enjoy it and feel less stuck making decisions.

Here are 10 Tips I would tell my younger self:

10 Decorating Tips

  1. Rule of 3 – Accessories and photos look best when grouped in odd numbers
  2. Use Candles – The scent and subtle glow can provide a “feel” throughout the house
  3. Hang Things – Don’t  be afraid you’ll hang it in the wrong place…it can always be moved.
  4. Be Seasonal – Bring in pinecones, flowers, acorns, grasses, and more to bring a seasonal feel.
  5. Less is More – Figure out the level of “stuff” that feels good to you. Then, edit it to keep it there.
  6. Use Rooms for Your Life – If you don’t use a room, to turn it into something you will use.
  7. Define Your Style – Find words that describe the look you want, use them to guide choices.
  8. Holidays – Add fun accessories (think pillows & covers) to create whimsy for minor holidays.
  9. Reuse – A piece that has lived a good life in one room might be perfect for another space.
  10. Ask for Help – You aren’t a decorating expert. Buy books and/or hire a professional to help.
