With lives that are often overworked and overwhelmed, finding space to “Charge” throughout the day can become a challenge.  So, we’ll wrap this week of personal energy posts with five easy ways to charge back up when you are finding yourself in a slump without the energy you need to be at your best.

  1. Breathe – Take 5 minutes, close your eyes, and focus on your breath.  Take long breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. You can set a timer and finish after 5 minutes. Do your best not to think about the worries of the day. Just focus on breathing and relaxing.
  2. Move – Spend 5 minutes moving your body.  This can range from doing a yoga pose to doing jumping jacks or quick sprints in your driveway.  Exercise naturally boost our energy and get the oxygen flowing in our bodies.
  3. Smell – Embrace aromatherapy. Light a candle, pull out the essential oils, or just smell some spices from the kitchen. Use the 5 minutes to really breath in the scent to provide a boost of energy.  Scents that work particularly well for energy include cinnamon, peppermint, ginger, orange, lemon, and eucalyptus.
  4. Drink Water – In particular, choose cold water.  Low energy can be caused by dehydration throughout the day even if we don’t feel thirsty.  Ice water provides the additional boost of energy to the body.
  5. Snack – Having a snack can replenish important nutrients that your body loses through the day. As the nutrients are depleted, your energy can feel low.  Some great energy building snacks include bananas, nuts, granola, berries, and peanut butter.

My Story

The time of day where I need a charge usually hits sometime between 2 and 4 in the afternoon.  Occasionally, another boost is needed in the evening around 7 or 8.

Of the list above, I typically use move, snacks, and water to get an energy boost.  I want to incorporate more smell into my future routines to try how that works for me.
