I have written previously about the types of energy we have in our day.

Based on our personal energy map, there are times we are better at different activities.

Today, I would like to go to a level deeper into the activities at work.

Mapping out the times during our workday that our mind and body would be best able to tackle different tasks and when we need the activities that provide mental rest.

Below are the different types of work:

Create – Focused time producing your best ideas and individual deep work.

Craft – Focused on lighter work like email, refining/editing writing or presentations.

Connect – Focused on time with others collaborating and coaching.

Consume – Focused on consuming content with purpose – advancing knowledge.

Work Energy Map

To start to build the ideal map of your day, here are a few questions to consider:

Which activities above drain your energy?

Which gives you energy?

For those that drain you, how long can you be engaged before needing a break?

For those that energize you, how quickly do they fill your energy cup?

What time of day are you at your best to engage with each activity?

Rest and Recharge

While activities above may allow us recovery time, there is one more to consider:

Charge – Focused on intentional breaks so you can be at your best the rest of the day.

Consider the 5-minute break activities that you could do to get your energy back.

The opportunities are endless; here are examples to get your personal list flowing:

Take a walk around the building.

Watch a video that has nothing to do with work.

Call a family member or friend.

Eat a snack.

Try mindfulness meditation.

Your Turn
