When losing a job, there is one path in clear view.
Get a new job.
This path is full of resume updates, cover letters, and applications.
Then, the bumpy next steps can arise.
Rejections. Ghosting.
Resulting in self-doubt.
Which leads to resume “tweaking”, more cover letters, and more applications.
My Perspective
The path described above can be discouraging and leave you wanting to quit trying.
I believe having multiple paths in play at the same time can help.
Below are some other paths that can positively impact your job search:
Connecting: Schedule time to meet with your professional network. Don’t go into the conversation with the expectation of something coming out of the meeting (this can also lead to disappointment and discouragement). Catch up, see how they are doing, maybe there are ways to support each other in some way. We never know what serendipity might come from these meetings.
Self-Reflection: Instead of spending every minute on the tactical parts of the job search, consider spending some time on inner work. This reflection time can provide insights about us, our strengths, and what makes us unique. The insights gained can then be leveraged to strengthen both your resume and the career stories that can be leveraged in interviews.
Thought-Leadership: The job search is the perfect time to reflect on the perspective we each have that can be shared with our professional networks. Spend some time on platforms like LinkedIn commenting on posts, sharing the content of others, and starting to share your own content.
Hobbies and Side Jobs: During a job search after a job loss, there is a lot of time to fill. While the search for a job needs to be the focus, you likely still have some time each day to focus on other things. This is a great opportunity to start a hobby or dream business that has always been on your mind. There is no risk of giving it a try. Especially if there is low/no cost to entry.
Who knows.
These alternative paths might just be the path to your future income stream(s).
Your Turn
