The path to taking control of our career and life begins with a strong foundation.

One element that creates the foundation is clarity on our values.

In Gartner’s HR Leaders Monthly: April 2024, there was a case study that highlighted a process MACU uses to help employees identify their values.

The first steps of the process are what I’ve historically used in workshops:

  1. Review the long list of potential values provided and select 10 that resonate.
  2. Narrow the list of 10 to 5.
  3. Narrow the five to your top 3.

The framework shared by MACU adds another step that I really love.

After selecting the top 3, they suggest you describe in 1-2 sentences why each value you choose is meaningful to you.

Then, during discussions about values with others you can use the descriptions for shared understanding.

My Perspective

I believe adding this additional layer will also help us understand why we connect with each value.

In fact, the description will make the tie stronger or possibly have us look back at the list and reconsider another value that should be higher on the list.

Below is the list of values that I use in workshops if you would like to give the process a try.

Your Turn

Have you defined your personal values?

How do you think these could help you guide your career and life?

Would this exercise lead to a good discussion with your leader about your next career move?
