Mirium-Webster defines ambition as an ardent desire for rank, fame, or power.

Google suggests it’s a strong desire to do or achieve something.

While ambition can be about titles and promotions.

It can also mean living with purpose, peace, and alignment.

Coming from an automotive background, I loved this quote:

“Ambition is a dream with a V8 engine.” – Elvis Presley

The key is to know the dream and then do the work necessary to achieve it.

The Positive & Negative Forces

Ambition can show up in both positive & negative ways.

On the positive side, we see increased productivity, innovation, creativity, and success.

We grow and develop, live our life purpose, and achieve financial stability.

However, along the way, ambition can also show up negatively.

We can experience burnout, have tunnel vision, and unrealistic expectations.

Some are at risk of compromising their values and prioritizing goals over relationships.

These negative aspects tend to occur when we are focused on status vs. contributions.

My Perspective

Lately, ambition has been questioned.

Burnout and unethical practices have skewed the perception to the negative side.

We have an opportunity to reframe and reimagine the role of ambition in our lives.

The key is to find balance.

Setting realistic and sustainable goals.

Creating healthy boundaries and managing our time and priorities.

Most importantly, shifting from external rewards like titles and wealth to intrinsic personal goals.

Rethinking the Elvis quote, maybe we need to be more conscious of caring for that V8.

Knowing when we need gas to refuel. Stopping to see the sites and gain inspiration along the way.
