You may have heard of the book The Good Enough Job.

Written by Simone Stolozoff the book pushes us to consider embracing a job that we find fulfilling and that fits into the rest of the life we want to lead.

Sometimes this might mean moving down the ladder in our primary career to find space in our life to pursue another interest…. or spend more time with our family…. or focus on our physical health.

I came across this quote that I thought tied well to becoming a Me-EO of your life and career:

“When we actively invest in our non-work selves, we create an identity no boss, company, or labor market has the power to affect.”

– Simone Stolzoff

My Perspective

The quote above really hits home for me.

I am one whose identity has been strongly tied to employers and titles.

I’ve struggled to figure out who I am without those labels.

Struggled to define the unique value I bring to the table.

Struggled to understand my “special sauce”.

It’s ironic that I’m known for being able to quickly discover the special sauce of a brand or another individual, but I can’t seem to see my own.

I’ve been working on it.

Applying all the tools in my toolkit that I provide others.

Doing the hard, deep work.

Personal and career development isn’t easy.

The answers that are right for one person aren’t right for another.

I’ll share my journey – the good, the bad, and the ugly – so you know that it’s tough.

The middles just before an insight arrives are messy.

Just like cleaning a closet “the mess gets worse before it gets better”.

The key is not to give up.

Day by Day.

Step by Step.

Your Turn

Have you tried to discover your special sauce?

Did things get messy before you had a breakthrough?

What advice would you give others who are working on their special sauce?
