We all want to be picked.

To be on the team.

Get the job.

Go on the date.

Win the award.

The list goes on and on.

The feeling we get when we are picked is hard to describe.

Yet, at the core, it validates that we matter.

We are “right”.

We meet the need that someone is trying to fill.

We “fit”.

My Story

Getting picked was relatively easy for me as I grew up.

I was generally good at my chosen sports.

I got generally good grades.

Promotions came when I expected them.

That’s why my current life is a little challenging at times.

Stepping out of the corporate world, I realize there are more rejections.

I’m not getting picked at the same rate I’m used to.

People don’t know me or what I can bring to a project.

There are yeses along the way, but I would be remiss if I didn’t admit the no’s sting.

It’s exactly what I said above.

Getting picked makes you realize what you do matters.

And somehow in my brain that translates to “I matter”.

We need to remind ourselves that we matter even in the face of rejection.

We always matter.

We need to remember to pick ourselves when others aren’t.

Your Turn

Do you struggle with not being picked?

Has being picked come easily to you over the years or have you faced a lot of no’s?

What do you do to get past rejection?
