Conversations about introverts are often confusing.
Many people believe that introverts are shy.
Or don’t like being around people.
Anti-social.
While extroverts are seen as the life of the party.
The true difference between introverts and extroverts is how they recharge their energy.
When introverts are drained, they need time alone to recharge.
On the other hand, when extroverts are drained, they gain energy when with other people.
Social Introversion
Social introverts love spending time with people.
They go to professional and personal events.
They love catching up with people in groups and 1on1.
They just have a limited social battery.
After a certain amount of time, they need a break.
Time to relax and reset.
My Story
This is familiar to me as I am a social introvert.
I love hanging out with family and friends….
Until I hit my wall. Then, I need a break. Sometimes 10-15 minutes will do the trick.
Other times I need more time away. Over the years, I’ve been able to observe my tendencies.
I know that my battery lasts (on average) 2 hours – sometimes more, sometimes less.
I know I need a plan for when the battery turns “red”.
When I go to events with others, I often drive separately giving me the space to leave when ready.
Knowing myself lets me manage both my needs and the needs of those around me.
Making experiences better for all of us.
