Sometimes a quote hits in a new way.
Today, that happened with this one:
“Think about your legacy, because you’re writing it every day.” – Gary Vaynerchuck
I recently finished reading the book What’s the Point?Turning Purpose Into Your Daily Superpower by Tom Rath. (Review here)
One of the messages in the book was that we should focus on our eulogy, not our resume.
The impact we make on others far exceeds the accomplishments we list on our resume.
Somehow, the idea of legacy resonates more with me than eulogy.
The eulogy is scripted and formal.
What is read at a moment our life’s highlight reel is played.
A legacy represents our fingerprints that show up on and on over time.
It might be a lesson we taught our children or grandchildren.
A piece of advice we shared with someone at work.
My Perspective
Legacy work starts after we understand our skills and our strengths.
We have some experience.
Knowledge and wisdom are growing.
Our legacy work happens in small moments every day.
Passing along what we know and helping grow and encourage others.
If we are writing that legacy every day, how might we change our actions?
This could be an interesting question to track for a few days.
We could see the balance between resume work and eulogy/legacy work.
The patterns might lead us to shift our behavior.
Your Turn
Does this quote resonate with you?
On a typical day, do you see where both legacy & resume work show up?
Are there ways this idea would shift your actions?
