The idea of an afternoon coffee break is likely not on the list for most of us.
At best we fill our coffee cup as we rush between meetings.
However, in Sweden, the afternoon break is special.
What is Fika?
Fika is a Swedish cultural ritual that translates to “having a coffee and cake break.”
But it is so much more than a caffeine fix.
It is a dedicated, mindful pause in the day.
Specifically designed to help us slow down, connect with others, and reset our brain.
The 3 Rules of Fika
To truly fika, you must follow a few simple guidelines:
- Step Away: Physically leave your workspace. No desks allowed.
- Bring a Treat: Pair your coffee or tea with a sweet baked good, traditionally a cinnamon bun (kanelbulle).
- Ban Work Talk: The time is for casual socializing, catching up, and bonding.
Why It Works
Science shows that our brains can’t focus for long stretches.
Taking a true mental break reduces stress, prevents burnout, and boosts creativity.
At work, regular fika breaks flatten hierarchies, build trust among coworkers, and increase overall productivity.
Whether you grab a colleague in the office, host a virtual coffee chat from home, or sit solo by a window to clear your mind, making time to fika can transform your workday.
