Control is an interesting word.

It implies strength and empowerment.

And can also imply being overbearing.

The definition is

“To exercise restraining or directing influence over. To regulate. To reduce the incidence or severity.”

My Perspective

We all want some level of control.

We use the word all the time.

It reduces anxiety and helps us feel more stable.

I think the key is to recognize when control tips over into something unhealthy.

A general rule – controlling things like your schedule and routine is fine.

Controlling your diet and exercise with healthy boundaries – also fine.

Controlling the number of executive requests your team needs to resolve – fine.

Trying to force the actions of other people – not at all fine.

I think the tipping point is in the definition of control.

To influence (suggest) works.

To restrain (force) doesn’t.

The next time your world feels out of control, focus on influence, not force.

Your Turn

Do you see both the positive and negative sides of control?

How could you ensure that you lean to the positive side during stressful situations?

Are there times when your control has shifted from positive to negative?
