Each year we have goals we want to achieve.
At work, we often think about goals that are in the hands of other people.
A promotion, a raise, a job change, etc.
With these goals, we don’t control the outcome.
I think a better question for the year is if we need to build our resume or our reputation.
Maybe some years it’s both.
Building our resume includes new education, skills, and experiences.
These could be skills needed to get that next promotion.
Building our reputation includes awareness and proof of our resume.
Case studies, career stories, networking, and thought leadership are key here.
My Perspective
We know what we want out of our career, but many struggle with the path to get there.
Many aspects of our career are controlled by others and along the way we lose ourselves.
Our agency to act on what we want.
We don’t know where to start.
This year, I encourage you to think about what might be holding you back.
Is it your resume or your reputation?
Or both?
What can you do to start shifting the tide and moving toward the future that is right for you.
Your Turn
Which do you need to build this year – your resume or your reputation?
What are the skills you need to build or the perceptions you need to shift?
How can you create a learning plan, networking strategy, case study development, or something else that will start to move the needle?
