In 2019, I picked the word joyful for my word of the year.

I wanted to remind myself of the people, places, and activities that brought me joy.

This was an enlightening year of discovery.

Recently, after taking the Values Bridge, a connection was made.

The results showed that the value of Beholderism is #2 on my list.

The definition is below:

“Those with Core Beholderism seek a life where elevated aesthetics are woven into daily existence. They yearn to be immersed in a world of positive sensory experiences. Where homes are comfortable, clean, and thoughtfully designed, where spaces are harmonious, scents are pleasant, and even the smallest details are intentional. Even something as simple as a beautiful, well-organized website can bring joy, while visual clutter or disharmony feels almost unbearable.” – Values Bridge

As I reflect on 2019, many of the “joyful” discoveries were tied to beholderism.

I reinvigorated my love of photography and started taking classes.

Rooms in my home got facelifts. I explored capsule wardrobes and joined a clothing style group.

Little did I know at the time that aesthetics was a top value for me.

One that I had been ignoring and putting on the backburner in my life.

The summary also says that:

“For those who do hold this value, though, aesthetic harmony is more than just preference it’s part of what makes life feel rich, ordered, and right.” – Values Bridge

This couldn’t be more true for me.

I look at anything – spaces, data, words, and more – and quickly know if something is out of place.

It just doesn’t “feel” right. The more I learn about this value the more things make sense.

The work I love to do. The projects I take on. The things I notice.

Beholderism isn’t at a surface level, it’s a deep strength that can be leveraged to make a difference.

We could all use more beauty and organization in our lives.
