Yesterday, we talked about the three cycles of confidence building.
One moment where we can leverage these cycles is when experiencing job loss.
Even when part of a big company reduction, we can doubt our worth.
What are we good at? Why would another company want to hire us?
The questions can swirl as we try to discover / rediscover how to act with confidence.
Here are some ways we can use each of the three cycles to bring our confidence back.
The Confidence Cycle
This first cycle is about taking action to build momentum.
We use it when we need to overcome fear, doubt, or procrastination.
After a job loss we can start with actions that are within reach to gain confidence.
Update a resume.
Reach out to connections.
Attend a networking event.
Small steps like these can gradually build our comfort and confidence with these activities.
Celebrate the small wins like a callback or a positive conversation at a networking event.
Confidence/Competence Loop
This loop suggests that as we build skills, we gain confidence in those areas.
We use this look when our focus is on skill-building or professional development.
A job loss causes some to feel that their knowledge & experience is outdated or irrelevant.
The confidence/competence loop can help us focus on improving or developing new skills.
During the job search, learning new tools or gaining certifications will improve competence.
In turn, this may build confidence in job applications and interviews.
Self-Esteem Cycle
The final cycle focuses on self-esteem.
This is an area that job loss can severely impact.
Especially for those who tightly tie self-worth to professional identity.
Shifting our focus quickly to personal value outside of work helps maintain a positive self-image.
We can focus on our strengths and contributions.
Volunteering and connecting with supportive communities can reinforce a sense of self-worth.
Combined Strategy
A great approach to confidence is a combination of all three cycles:
- Step 1: Begin with the Confidence Cycle by taking small steps to regain momentum after (e.g., updating a LinkedIn profile, making new connections).
- Step 2: Engage the Confidence/Competence Loop by identifying skills that need strengthening and working on those areas (e.g., taking a short course or workshop).
- Step 3: Strengthen the Self-Esteem Cycle by focusing on personal strengths, reframing the job loss as an opportunity for growth, and taking actions that reinforce positive self-worth (e.g., journaling about achievements, engaging in hobbies).
