Confidence.

Sometimes we have it, sometimes we don’t.

As we gain more experience, our confidence grows.

Events along our career path can impact our confidence…both negatively and positively.

There are three cycles that we can consider as we look to build confidence.

The Confidence Cycle

This first cycle is about taking action to build momentum.

The belief is that confidence builds upon itself.

When we step out of our comfort zone and act, we start to have small successes.

Success builds confidence, leading to bigger challenges, more success, and more confidence.

This is a positive feedback loop where action breeds confidence, and confidence fuels more action.

When to Use: When we need to overcome fear, doubt, or procrastination.

Example: When starting a new project or job, this approach can break through initial discomfort.

Confidence/Competence Loop

This loop illustrates the relationship between confidence and knowledge.

We develop skills (competence) through practice and learning.

As we do, our confidence grows.  In turn, increased confidence motivates us to continue improving their competence.

When to Use: When our focus is on skill-building or professional development.

Example: In a learning environment, such as developing technical or leadership skills.

Self-Esteem Cycle

This final cycle is about how self-worth influences our behavior and outcomes.

Positive self-esteem encourages us to take healthy risks.

Embrace challenges.

Believe in our potential.

This leads to positive experiences and success.

These positive outcomes reinforce our sense of self-worth.

On the flip side, low self-esteem can lead us to avoid challenges, fear failure, and limit our growth.

This cycle can be either empowering or limiting depending on our self-perception.

When to Use: When we struggle with self-worth, self-image, or a negative inner dialogue.

Example: Dealing with imposter syndrome, identity loss after a layoff, or negative self-talk.
