We hear a lot about strategy in business.
The plan. The roadmap. The five-year vision.
But what if strategy isn’t just about competitive advantage?
What if it’s a path to personal agency?
My Perspective
Strategy doesn’t give us control over outcomes.
It gives us something better.
A scaffold.
Without strategy, we’re constantly in response mode.
Someone else’s urgency becomes our priority.
We end up busy, but not intentional.
Strategy changes that.
It creates space for us to act with intention instead of just reacting.
A scaffold doesn’t dictate every move.
It creates boundaries and support so you can do the work.
Strategy establishes clarity on what you’re building toward.
Boundaries that protect your time and energy.
Permission to let go of what doesn’t fit.
Room for improvisation within structure.
You’re not locked in. You’re held up.
But here’s the catch.
Strategy can turn from scaffold to a box if we’re not careful.
When we become so attached to the plan that we ignore reality.
When we mistake “having a strategy” for “having control.”
If your strategy feels heavy or rigid, it’s time to revisit.
Real agency isn’t just about having a strategy.
It’s about knowing when to follow it and when to adjust.
Strategy creates the container.
Agency is what happens inside it.
Building Your Own Scaffold
So how do we use strategy to create more agency in our lives?
Start with these questions:
What matters most to me right now? Not what should matter. What actually does.
Where am I spending time that doesn’t align? This is where agency gets lost. In the gaps between intention and action.
What boundaries would create more space? Sometimes agency means protecting what we’ve built.
How can I build in flexibility? The strongest scaffolds have some give. Where can your strategy bend without breaking?
What does success look like? Not the glossy version. The version that feels true on a Tuesday afternoon.
Your Turn
Do you have a strategy at work, in your career, and for your life?
Does it feel like a scaffold that supports you or a weight you’re carrying?
Where could you create more space for agency this week?
What one boundary could you set that would give you more room to choose?
