There was a quote by James Clear that got me thinking:
“There are 4 types of wealth:
- Financial Wealth (money)
- Social Wealth (status)
- Time Wealth (freedom)
- Physical Wealth (health)
Be wary of jobs that lure you in with 1 and 2 but rob you of 3 and 4.”
– James Clear
We can all step back, think about our life to date and consider the balance.
My Story
I can look back at moments in my career where I chased 1 & 2 at the expense of 3 & 4.
I have always loved my work and it can be easy to get wrapped up in the projects.
As a result, the rest of my life and my health slipped away without noticing.
I’m not sure I “saw” it at the time, but I recognize it now.
My Perspective
I started to wonder if there was “wealth” to be found in all 8 dimensions of wellbeing.
The list below isn’t perfect but reflects my current thinking.
I have shifted financial wealth from money (in his original list) to freedom.
Time isn’t one of the categories and I think financial wealth is what provides freedom.
- Physical Wealth – Health
- Financial Wealth – Freedom
- Occupational Wealth – Recognition
- Social Wealth – Status
- Spiritual Wealth – Peace
- Intellectual Wealth – Creativity
- Emotional Wealth – Love
- Environmental Wealth – Harmony
