As noted in the Monday post, we can use our CliftonStrengths to support us in all areas of our life. They can guide us to a plan that feels right for each of us.

This post dives into how those with Influencing Themes can highlight their talents on their resume AND use these strengths to tailor their job search in a way that is suited to their tendencies.

Below is a summary of each Influencing Theme and some tips on how to use the theme in the job search. The first sentence of each comes from the CliftonStrengths Overviews. The ideas for approach and resume are my thoughts based on my years working as a CliftonStrengths coach.

Activator

“People exceptionally talented in the Activator theme can make things happen by turning thoughts into action. They want to do things now rather than simply talk about them.” – Gallup

Approach: You’ll likely dive right into the job search, immediately reaching out to your network and applying to positions. Your strength lies in acting quickly.

Resume: Showcase your ability to initiate projects and your enthusiasm for getting things started. Employers value proactive candidates.

Command

“People exceptionally talented in the Command theme have presence. They can take control of a situation and make decisions.” – Gallup

Approach: Take charge of your job search, confidently reaching out to potential employers and negotiating offers. You’ll approach interviews with a strong presence.

Resume: Present yourself as a natural leader who can take charge and make tough decisions. Employers often seek candidates who can confidently guide teams.

Communication

“People exceptionally talented in the Communication theme generally find it easy to put their thoughts into words. They are good conversationalists and presenters.” – Gallup

Approach: Focus on crafting compelling resumes and cover letters, and you’ll excel in interviews by clearly articulating your strengths and experiences.

Resume: Highlight your ability to articulate ideas clearly and persuasively. Provide examples of successful presentations or written communications.

Competition

“People exceptionally talented in the Competition theme measure their progress against the performance of others. They strive to win first place and revel in contests.” – Gallup

Approach: You’ll approach the job search like a challenge or a game, aiming to secure positions at top companies, comparing your progress to others, and pushing yourself to stand out.

Resume: Position yourself as someone who thrives on challenges and is motivated by achieving success. Discuss your achievements in competitive environments.

Maximizer

“People exceptionally talented in the Maximizer theme focus on strengths as a way to stimulate personal and group excellence. They seek to transform something strong into something superb.” – Gallup

Approach: Focus on finding roles where you can leverage your strengths and achieve excellence. You’ll seek opportunities that allow you to maximize your potential.

Resume: Highlight your ability to take good things and make them great. Discuss how you’ve improved processes, products, or teams.

Self-Assurance

People exceptionally talented in the Self-Assurance theme feel confident in their ability to take risks and manage their own lives. They have an inner compass that gives them certainty in their decisions.

Approach: Approach your job search with confidence, trusting your judgment and abilities. You’ll likely take bold steps, such as applying for stretch roles or negotiating offers assertively.

Resume: Highlight your confidence and ability to make decisions independently. Employers value candidates who are self-reliant and can work with autonomy.

Significance

“People exceptionally talented in the Significance theme want to make a big impact. They are independent and prioritize projects based on how much influence they will have on their organization or people around them.” – Gallup

Approach: You’ll target high-impact roles where you can make a difference. Your job search will focus on finding positions that offer visibility and the chance to contribute meaningfully.

Resume: Emphasize your drive to make a meaningful impact. Discuss how your contributions have made a difference in your previous roles.

Woo

“People exceptionally talented in the Woo theme love the challenge of meeting new people and winning them over. They derive satisfaction from breaking the ice and making a connection.” – Gallup

Approach: You’ll focus on networking and making a strong first impression. Your job search will involve reaching out to a broad range of contacts & winning over employers with your charm.

Resume: Highlight your ability to connect with others quickly. Employers appreciate candidates who can build rapport and influence internal and external stakeholders.
