The definition of significance is the quality of being worthy of attention.

Being important.

There is also statistical significance.

A deviation from the expected due to random variations.

Then there is the importance, relevance, and meaning of something in the grand scheme of things.

This can range from individual experiences to societal contributions.

My Perspective

When we think about significance and making an impact, often it’s not about the attention.

We want to contribute value and importance to something we believe in.

This could be big or small.

Changing the world or our small town.

At the core, we need to define and pursue endeavors that are meaningful to us.

Our contributions at home, at work, in our community, and the world at large define our legacy.

We strive to leave a lasting mark on the world.

Projects that make a positive difference connect us to something larger than ourselves.

Each of us brings our unique gifts to the world.

The beauty happens when we connect with a purpose that allows us to unleash those gifts.

The tricky part is that there is no right answer.

No list of which purpose is better than another.

Our Ikigai may provide us with clues.

Your Turn

How does the center of your Ikigai tie to significance?

Can you connect that purpose at home, at work, and in your community?

What if you work toward this purpose and are never recognized, did you still make a difference?
