There is more news these days about sabbaticals.

These are extended breaks from a job that can last anywhere from one month to two years.

The difference between a sabbatical and a career break is employment.

If the intention is to return to an employer, you take a sabbatical.

Sometimes paid.

Sometimes not.

If you resign or get laid off, the time away is called a career break.

Both situations result in the same thing.

Time away from traditional work for other pursuits.

Examples of sabbaticals and career breaks include pursuing additional education, travel, personal passion projects, and spending time with family.

Employees come back from a sabbatical rejuvenated, focused, and full of new ideas.

My Perspective

I think sabbaticals should become a normal part of our employment cycles.

Every 5-10 years, take a year to rediscover who you are and where you want to go next.

Explore new paths.

Rest.

Rejuvenate.

Plan for the future.

My Story

I’m on my third phase of “career breaks”.

Every 10 years, I’ve had the opportunity to step away from work, try new things, and refocus.

The first breaks were tied to the birth of my children – 2 breaks lasting 4 months each.

These breaks were 8 and 11 years into my career.

I focused on my family and prepared for the challenges of new roles when I returned.

The second break was 10 years later.

During this break, I started two businesses, spent quality time with my family, and considered the direction I wanted my career to take next.

The third break is happening now – 10 years later.

During this break, I’ve launched a book, obtained a Sustainability Certificate from MIT, started a blogging daily, created over 550 posts, and provided marketing consulting.

I’m now well positioned and focused on where I want the next chapter to lead.

My Advice

All these breaks have given me clarity on my path forward.

For those who have never taken a sabbatical, I highly recommend it.

Even for 2-4 months, removing the burdens and stress of day-to-day work can provide clarity.

You will come back to your role with new energy.

Or you will decide to point that energy in an all-new direction.

Either way, you’ve done something to reinforce you are a MeEO in charge of your path.

My only disclaimer – if your leave is not paid, get your finances in order before taking the break.

Your Turn

Have you ever taken a sabbatical or a career break?

If so, what benefits do you see?

If you were to take one in the next year, where would you place your focus?
