This time of year, some of us start to think about our hopes and dreams for next year.

Our career aspirations.

Our relationships.

Personal development.

Achievements.

When it comes to our career, there is a tendency for us to let others lead the way.

What does our leader think is the right next step for us?

What does our family think?

How about friends and coworkers?

I believe a challenge with too much career input is that we end up in someone else’s vision.

Those providing the input may want very different things.

For themselves….and for us.

Those aspirations may show up in their advice on our next step.

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t listen to the input from those close to us.

Monica Rivera summed it up well in this quote:

“Not everyone has your vision so don’t let them block your view.” – Monica Rivera

We need to set our own vision.

Take the time to think deeply about what we really want.

Consider where our career has been.

What we enjoy.

How we could start to move toward the vision we have.

Leverage those around us for support.

And guidance.

Not direction.

Your Turn

Do you have a vision for your career?

Are others influencing you in different directions?

How can you look for support on the path YOU want to follow?
