There are two distinctive camps when it comes to loving our work.

Do what you love.

OR

Love what you do.

Do what you love suggests we follow our passion.

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

– Confucius

On the other side, loving what you do suggests we enjoy the process of our work.

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

– Steve Jobs

My Perspective

I believe we could blend these ideas.

We could seek out jobs that we are qualified for AND interested in.

Do we like the company?

Or the product we would be working on?

If we find a connection, the likelihood of engagement is higher.

Then, we can find ways to love that job.

We can lean in to learn more.

Add our creativity to the role.

Look for ways to innovate and make the position stronger.

Starting with doing what you love is a good foundation for loving what you do.

The opposite order seems more challenging.

Your Turn

What do you think of these two approaches?

Do you believe in one approach more than the other?

Is your current role allowing you to both do what you love and love what you do?
