Deloitte published a piece of research in 2013 that intrigued me.
The three authors of the report – John Hagel III, John Seely Brown, and Tamara Samoylova – dove into employee engagement and concluded this:
“While employee engagement was sufficient in a world of predictability that was designed to optimize scalable efficiency, engagement will be insufficient in a world of unpredictability, constant change, and disruption.”

If we thought the world was unpredictable, changing, and disrupted in 2013, look at us 10 years later.
Their premise was that we needed to move from employee engagement to understanding the Passion of the Explorer. Below is a chart from the research.
My Perspective
A couple points that I think are worth noting are the moves in commitment and relationships.
These areas indicate an involvement in a domain or discipline outside our organizations.
There have always been professional groups and networking events.
This goes deeper.
Connecting with people from other companies and academia to push learning.
More intentionality around personal interests and connections.
I also see other trends behind this chart.
Careers are managed by the individual, not the company.
A shift to being measured on output instead of presence.
A new partnership and agreement between organizations and their employees.
