When having conversations with others about careers, I often hear people feel “stuck”.

The reasons vary greatly and still end in the same place.

Stuck.

When we feel stuck, we don’t see hope and possibility.

We forget we have autonomy around our career.

As a reminder:

“Autonomy is the ability make decisions, speak, and act on one’s own behalf without interference from another party.”

And

“The state of being self-governing, or leading one’s life according to one’s own values, desires, or reasons.”

My Perspective

Knowledge workers have more autonomy than many jobs out there.

Yet, this is the group feeling stuck.

We can decide what industry we would like to work in.

If full time, part time, or freelance would fit our lifestyle the best.

We could get more education – a degree or certificate – to make a pivot in the discipline we pursue.

So, why are we stuck?

Because making a change will take effort.

This ties back to entropy.

If we want a different “order” in our life, we need to apply “energy” to get there.

The path may seem too daunting.

Or scary.

We might lack confidence to get there.

Instead of feeling stuck, get clear on the end goal and start taking small steps.

We have autonomy over our careers.

We are the Me-EO.
