Can you tell me a bit about yourself?

This is a question we can hear in many situations.

Meeting someone new.

Becoming a guest on a podcast.

An interview for a new job.

We might know the question will be asked.

We think it’s an easy one.

So, we don’t prepare in the same way we might for “tougher” questions.

The result can be fumbling the answer.

Dragging on about every role we’ve held.

Or forgetting significant points about our history.

My Perspective

This question is often the first question asked in a conversation.

Providing a first impression.

Setting the tone for the meeting or interview.

Conveying our personality and communication style.

Showing how we present.

Demonstrating what we consider to be unique about ourselves.

As a result, this question might be considered the most important question.

Knowing our story… yes, story… is key.

Creating Your Story

Think of the response as a professional elevator pitch.

Focused on three main points:

  • Present: Highlight what you’re doing now and how it ties to this meeting/interview.
  • Past: Cover previous roles and relevant experience in context to this conversation.
  • Future: State how this opportunity ties to your future goals.

The future statement might not be used in all situations.

Your Turn

Have you prepared a response to the “tell me about yourself” conversation?

How have your experiences gone with this question?

What would you like to improve in the future?
