I’m at an interesting point with AI.
I love some things and I’m growing irritated with others.
People are referring to “AI slop”.
The massive amount of low-quality, mass-produced content created by AI.
This “slop” can lack accuracy, effort, and originality.
There is no human thought behind it.
We are all starting to see the cues.
It started with the long dash.
This one is easy to spot.
There was another cue that really bugs me, but I didn’t know how to name it.
I kept calling it “flowery” language.
Finally, I saw a Fast Company article that spelled out the pattern.
“It’s not x, it’s y.”
Replace “it” with you, we, or any other term and you get my “flowery” statement.
“You’re not behind, you’re becoming.”
Seriously?! When did we start talking like this?
And what machine learning genius programmed this into AI?
I love so many things about AI, but I struggle when we treat it like an expert.
AI is more like our intern.
We need to take what it provides and add the human layer.
Taking the time to ask, “does this make sense?” or “would I express this idea in this way?”
Here’s a good example of me checking my AI intern’s work:

Your Turn
Do you recognize when something has been written by AI?
What are the cues that stand out to you?
How do you ensure you are using AI to support your work vs. do your work?
