The other day, I heard someone use the word audacious.

The word means bold, fearless ambition.

Being audacious isn’t about being reckless.

It’s having the courage to pursue something beyond the norm.

Taking bold strides toward a future that others might think impossible.

The BHAG

The most common mention of the word audacity is tied to BHAG – a “Big Hairy Audacious Goal.”

This concept was launched in the 1994 book Build to Last by Jim Collins & Jerry Porras.

The purpose of the BHAG was to challenge companies and people to think bigger.

A BHAG is a statement of purpose aimed at 10-30 years out.

The BHAG inspires action.

Serves as a North Star.

Guiding efforts over time.

My Perspective

I’ve seen the power of the BHAG.

Working at Saturn in the 1990s and 2000s there was a BHAG.

The team saw the vision.

Had the action steps to aim big.

Progress was made.

Many industry firsts were accomplished along the way.

I believe BHAGs would be a great tool for companies to bring back into use.

I also think the concept could be applied to personal development.

Creating a BHAG that guides your personal path for the next 10-30 years.

Keeping you on track for a big vision.

Elements of a BHAG

Below are key characteristics of a BHAG statement:

  • Bold and Audacious: It should be big enough that it feels almost impossible to achieve at first.
  • Clear and Compelling: Can be understood immediately so people can rally behind it.
  • Long-term: A BHAG is something that could take a decade or more to achieve.
  • Inspiring: It should fire up passion and commitment, fostering a sense of mission and purpose.

If you’re inspired by the idea of setting a BHAG, here’s how you can get started:

  1. Identify a Vision: What do you want to achieve in the next 10 to 30 years? Think big and focus on something that excites you.
  2. Clarify the Purpose: Why does this goal matter? Understanding the deeper purpose behind your BHAG will keep you motivated.
  3. Make it Audacious: A BHAG should stretch your limits, so be bold. If it feels slightly out of reach or even a bit scary, you’re on the right track.
  4. Involve Others: Whether it’s in your personal or professional life, having people who believe in your vision will help you stay focused and inspired.
  5. Stay the Course: Pursuing a BHAG takes time. Keep the focus on the long-term goal and stay resilient through setbacks which will be part of the journey.
