The way work is based on career ladders and titles is holding us back.
Here, I don’t just mean individuals, I mean companies as well.
Individuals don’t have the career opportunities that their skills could achieve.
Companies don’t get the most out of the team they have.
In a 2022 article by the Harvard Business Review, they share interesting points on how things are changing and how businesses need to change their approach.
“For organizations and HR, however, navigating this landscape is fraught. Companies seek to win the ‘war for talent’, yet almost every aspect of the battlefield has changed. Many people are no longer interested or inspired by climbing a career ladder that someone else built.” – HBR
The article goes on to discuss how organizations can start to embrace and leverage the portfolio of skills and experience each of their employees possesses.
My Perspective
I don’t see many projects today that require the same set of skills for long periods of time.
Each initiative has different challenges and takes different thinking to solve.
Companies who can unlock and unleash all the talent of their internal and external talent will win in the future.
We are ready for a revolution in organizational development.
Systems of the past aren’t working.
Change is always difficult, but those who can figure this out will make a difference for both the individual and the organization.
