We’ve likely all heard the quote:
“You get what you work for, not what you wish for.”
– Howard A. Tullman
The concept is simple – achieving your dreams takes work.
Wishing is the easy part.
We can close our eyes and imagine a future filled with achievements and accomplishments.
But those wishes alone won’t bring us any closer to our goals.
To turn these dreams into reality, we must put in hard work, dedication, and effort.
In a world already filled with overwork and overwhelm, this application is tricky.
My Perspective
I believe that the challenge is more for projects we want to do, not the ones that have to be done.
We finish projects at work.
We cook dinner.
Do laundry.
The list is full.
What we often don’t do is dedicate the time and work to our want to do’s.
Painting. Woodworking. Running a marathon. Writing.
Or, at work, this might be a project that doesn’t have a specific deliverable or deadline.
Whatever your “wishes” might be, these are more challenging.
Here are a few strategies to apply when you’re feeling overwhelmed:
- Set Realistic Goals: Break your larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks.
- Prioritize: Focus tasks based on their importance and deadlines.
- Create a Plan: Develop a clear plan or a to-do list that outlines what needs to be done.
- Time Management: Allocate specific blocks of time for tasks and activities.
- Seek Support: Reach out to friends, family, or mentors for advice and support.
- Learn to Say No: Set boundaries and say no to additional commitments or tasks.
- Stay Focused on Your Why: Remind yourself of your reasons for pursuing your goals.
Your Turn
What is your wish that never seems to be achieved?
What one task would be a good first step that you could do today?
Is there one commitment on your calendar today you could say no to and take the first step?
