We all live by scripts.

Not the kind read by actors.

The ones we each carry inside.

Scripts are the rules and beliefs we picked up along the way.

From family.

From school.

From work.

From culture.

They become the hidden codes that drive our choices.

Sometimes we know them.

Yet, a lot of times we don’t recognize they are there.

Here are a few common scripts:

Always say yes.

Rest is lazy.

I must be perfect.

When a script is unconscious, it runs the show.

We follow it even when it leads us straight into stress, exhaustion, or burnout.

The good news is that we all have the power to flip our scripts.

Instead of “Always say yes,” try “My no protects my best yes.”

Instead of “Rest is lazy,” try “Rest is fuel.”

Instead of “I must be perfect,” try “Progress beats perfection.”

When we flip a script, we reclaim agency.

We move from being unconsciously driven to consciously choosing.

From defense to offense.

That’s when our story starts to change.

More Scripts to Flip

Here are some more common scripts and their flips:

I can’t rest until everything is done.Rest is part of getting things done.
If I don’t do it, no one will.I don’t have to carry it all myself.
Being busy means I’m important.Being present means I matter.
Achievement equals worth.I have value beyond my accomplishments.
I have to keep everyone happy.I can’t meet everyone’s needs — and that’s okay.
I should always be available.Boundaries protect my energy and focus.
Asking for help is weakness.Asking for help is strength in action.
Saying no disappoints people.Saying no lets me give a stronger yes.
