Joy is an interesting concept.
Many intertwine joy with happiness.
Yet, they are different.
Happiness is a more extended emotional state frequently linked to external factors.
We tie happiness to our general well-being and pursue it as a long-term goal.
Joy is shorter and more intense, often linked to internal connection and fulfillment.
We tie joy to moments that bring us delight and are more spontaneous.
My Perspective
I don’t think we spend enough time understanding what brings us joy.
Understanding the moments that bring us delight, make us laugh, and just stop to enjoy.
Recognizing the activities that fill our cup.
Figuring out our personal “joy map” can be an exciting treasure hunt.
My Story
About 7 years ago, I spent a week considering what brought me joy.
I was mindful of the moments in the week when joy occurred.
I considered activities and hobbies that brought me joy.
The most insightful activity for me – thinking about what I enjoyed as a child.
From the last one, this list emerged:
- Reading Fiction – I love fiction and with the crazy of raising kids, I only read non-fiction (if I read).
- Puzzles – I loved logic puzzles. So, I bought a few books and pull them out from time to time.
- Photography – This was the catalyst for me signing up to get my photography certificate.
- Color & Design – Scrapbooks, layout, coloring. I started incorporating these back in my life.
The formula for discovering our joy map will be different for each of us.
