Ever feel the urge to learn something new but don’t know where to start?
Often, we have skills in mind like storytelling, design thinking, or data visualization.
But the path forward feels foggy.
Books pile up, courses are purchased and not completed, videos multiply, and more.
Before long, our curiosity takes a backseat to everyday life.
Here’s a better way: reflect on the plan, then partner with AI.
A few prompts can help us clarify what we want, why it matters, and how it can fit in our daily life.
From there, AI can act like a personal learning designer and help build the plan.
Reflection
Take 10–15 minutes to write your responses to the prompts below.
Don’t overthink your answers, just write what comes to mind.
You might be surprised by what surfaces.
Goal Clarity
- What skill or topic do I want to learn?
- Why is this important to me right now? (career goal, personal interest, etc.)
- How much time can I realistically dedicate? (30 minutes/day, 2 hours/week, etc.)
- What’s my ideal timeframe to feel confident or “complete”? (1 month, 3 months, ongoing)
Current Skill Level
- How would I rate my current knowledge? (Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced)
- Are there specific areas within the topic I feel confused or stuck on?
- What would success look like?
Preferences and Style
- How do I like to learn? (e.g., reading, videos, podcasts, hands-on, group discussion)
- Do I prefer structured programs or flexible, choose-your-own-adventure style?
- Would I like the plan to include reflection, journaling, creative exercises, a project?
- Are there authors, podcasters, etc. that I want included in the plan?
- Do I have access to paid resources like LinkedIn Learning or Lynda that could be leveraged?
Share Your Notes with AI
Once reflection is complete, turn the insights into a single prompt like this:
I’d like to create a personal learning plan with your help.
- The topic I want to learn is: [Insert topic]
- Why this matters to me: [Your motivation]
- I can commit to: [Time/day or week]
- I’d like this plan to run for: [Number of weeks/months]
- My current level of experience is: [Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced]
- I’m currently confused about: [if applicable]
- Upon completion: [success would look like]
- My preferred learning styles are: [Reading, podcasts, hands-on, etc.]
- I’m open to: [Reflection prompts, journaling, a final project, etc.]
- I prefer: [structure vs. flexibility]
- I would like the plan to consider: [authors or resources]
Please create a step-by-step learning plan that includes:
- Weekly themes
- Recommended books, podcasts, or courses
- Optional reflection prompts or projects
- A resource summary at the end
Refine The Plan
Once we see the initial plan, we can work to make it stronger. Asking questions. Looking for things that are missing. Or things included that aren’t necessary. Keep going until the plan feels “right”.
Follow Your Custom Plan
Once we have our learning plan, the magic happens in the doing.
It’s up to us to carve out space each day or week.
Experimenting with new ideas and staying curious.
Revisit the plan halfway through to check in with how it’s going.
Ask AI for a refresh if needed.
