When we think about our work, there are times for input and times for output.

The input moments are the times when you are taking in information.

This could be doing research for a project, attending meetings, coordinating with others, or reading a book or magazine.

The times for output are focused on creating something of value for internal or external customers.

Our days are full of both input and output.

A comment made in a group meeting last week was interesting to me.

“Output before input everyday”

Dawn Van Win

The point is that we should complete our outputs each day before we start the inputs.

My Story & A Curiosity

Over the years, I’ve learned that the morning hours are the best time for me to produce output.

The goal is always to get a couple hours of output in before letting the day that is mostly filled with input get away from me.

I wonder if outputs before inputs is right for everyone or if this is a better rule for morning larks.

I’m curious if night owls have the same cycle at different hours of the day or if they are better served by considering input before output.

Your Turn

What percentage of your day is focused on input vs. output?

Do you follow the philosophy of output before input?

Are there adjustments you are considering for your day based on these insights?
