As we look at the year ahead, we may have big goals.

A promotion at work. Run a marathon. Improve our health. Write a book.

Big. The long game.

What about the short game?

The projects that might take place in one afternoon or over a weekend.

Changing a light fixture. An afternoon at the zoo over the summer.

Purchasing the perfect pair of jeans. The list goes on and on.

My Inspiration

Over the last 5ish years, I’ve been drawn to a framework from the Happier podcast.

Gretchen and her sister Liz create goal lists tied to the year.

23 for 23, 24 in 24, and soon….25 for 25. Here’s an episode that was setting 24 for 24.

These lists contain aims of various sizes from the easy to complete to the more challenging.

Here is a video where Gretchen explains the approach.

I really like the advice at the end of the video to “focus on actions, not outcomes.”

My Idea for 25

I have an idea for the year ahead that takes inspiration from their approach.

This year, I want to do a 25 in 25.

It will look like this: 3 goals for each of the 8 dimensions of wellbeing.

PhysicalOccupationalFinancialSocialIntellectualEnvironmentalEmotionalSpiritual.

2 of the 3 in each category will be relatively easy to complete.

One will be a bit more ambitious. Not out of control ambitious. Just a stretch.

Taking a little more action and dedication.

Now, if you did math, you would realize that it only adds up to 24.

What about #25?  Well, that one is special. That will be my BHAG for the year.

My Big Hairy Audacious Goal. To learn more about BHAGs, check out this post.

I imagine my challenge as I figure this one out will be to keep it focused on action, not outcome.

Your Turn
