Sometimes we start the year with goals that are too broad and unfocused.

Examples might be improving our health, getting a promotion, or updating our homes.

To get specific about what we want, we could leverage a from – to chart.

On the left, you list the current state as the “from”.

On the right, you list what you want to move “to”.

To use the home as a simple example, the chart might look like this:

From                                  To

Unorganized                     Organized

Outdated                          Modern

Cozy                                   Spacious

Museum-like                    Lived In

Those are just a few examples.

You can apply the technique to any area of your life.

With this additional information you can start brainstorming what could make this happen.

You will then be able to take those ideas and break them down into smaller pieces.

The smaller the pieces the less overwhelming and the more likely the change you seek will happen.

My Perspective

The from-to approach has been helpful for me when I struggle to figure out where to start.

The process often identifies the changes I want.

Once that is covered, I can start coming up with ideas of things to do.

I’ve also used this in work setting when shifting the direction of a brand or product.

Knowing where you are and where you want to be helps make nearly any project clearer.

Your Turn

Have you used the from-to model before?

How could it help you with your goals for the year ahead?

Is there an application at work that might make a project path clearer?
