I often hear or say the phrase “heads down”.

This happens when we need to dig into a project.

A work sprint.

Some research.

A home improvement activity.

The projects can vary.

However, the idea of going all in to complete is there in every situation.

What I haven’t heard (or said) very often is “heads up”.

The opposite of heads down.

The time when we aren’t focused on a project.

Instead, we are connecting. Exploring. Learning.

We are out in the world, taking things in.

My Perspective

I think we might each have a default state in our lives.

For some, life might be heads up.

Connecting. Engaging. Exploring.

We must be reminded to go heads down.

For others, life is heads down.

Working.

Creating.

Thinking.

We must be reminded to go heads up.

Looking at the two, I believe I’m more heads down.

I always have a project (or three) in progress and love to stay in the creating mode.

I need to remind myself to go heads up.

Take a walk.

Have a conversation.

Explore without an outcome in mind.

Your Turn

Is your default more heads up or heads down?

What do you do to encourage yourself to spend time in the other state?

How could you find more balance between the two in your daily life?
