I saw an article in Mediapost that talked about the trend toward “cozy”.

We all know that at this time of year, especially in the northern US, the weather is getting cooler.

As it does, we lean toward “cozy”.

Warmer clothes.

Darker days.

And snuggling in for the cold ahead.

What I didn’t realize is that the idea of seeking out coziness has been on the rise.

The article suggests that the trend has been increasing since 2015.

A quick look at Google Trends showed the growth in search results for cozy.

Fairly flat 2004-2010, slight growth 2010-2015, and more significant growth each year since then.

Cozy as Armor

The interesting part of the article was that cozy is now solving more than cold weather.

“We need to think of cozy not just as a vibe but instead as a (fluffy) set of armor in a world that feels darker, colder, and more unsettled every year.” – MediaPost

They give examples beyond normal sweaters, blankets and candles.

Cozy gaming and cozy mysteries were two that caught my attention.

The article also suggests that there is a lot of “fake cozy” out there making room for authenticity.

Real cozy isn’t just aesthetic.

It’s a feeling of safety, intention, and slowing down in a world that keeps accelerating.

Cozy in Unexpected Places

This trend got me thinking about ways to cozy our life in unexpected places.

How could we help support our need for cozy?

How could we be more intentional about building it in?

Here are a few places where cozy could shift an experience:

The Cozy Commute: If we know that a commute can be unpleasant and dreaded, why not cozy it? Cozy playlists. Cozy scents. Cozy accessories. A drive or train ride becomes something you’re looking forward to instead of something to endure.

The Cozy Career Plan: We often approach career conversations with stress and urgency. What if we slowed down? Created space to reflect on what we want without pressure? Maybe a quiet coffee shop. A journal. Time to think without the noise. Career planning becomes exploration instead of anxiety.

The Cozy Meeting: Not every meeting needs to be high-energy and fast-paced. Some conversations need room to breathe. What if we designed meetings with intention? Natural light. Comfortable seating. Time for real thinking instead of rushed decisions. A meeting becomes a place where people want to show up.

The Cozy Learning: Training and development often feel clinical and mandatory. What if learning spaces felt safe, welcoming, and designed for curiosity? That’s when real growth happens.

My Perspective

The rise of cozy tells us something important about what we’re experiencing collectively.

We’re seeking refuge.

Safety.

Pauses in the midst of overwhelm.

And we’re willing to be intentional about creating it.

The trend isn’t frivolous.

Instead, it’s a signal that we need to protect our sense of ease and belonging.

For those building teams, leading organizations, or shaping experiences, this is an invitation.

Where in your world could you add more cozy?

Not in a surface-level way, but authentically.

What would it feel like for your people to approach their work with less dread and more comfort?

Your Turn

Where do you naturally seek out cozy in your life?

What’s one place in your work or personal routine that feels the opposite of cozy?

What would it take to bring more authenticity and ease into that space?

How could you create your own version of cozy armor in a world that often feels unsettled?
