Summer always feels like it’ll stretch on forever.
But it doesn’t. If we’re not careful, we blink and it’s back-to-school, back-to-routine.
This year, let’s not miss the chance to make it count.
Let’s turn summer into a game worth playing.
Think streaks, quests, and badges.
Because when life feels like a game, we want to show up and play.
My Perspective
Gamification works because it taps into our desire for progress, feedback, and rewards.
Summer gives us fresh energy that’s ideal for experimentation.
Here are a few ways we could gamify our summer:
Create Summer Quests: Instead of one big goal, set up mini quests such as 10 nature walks. 3 weekend adventures. 1 digital detox. Give each quest a name like “Trailblazer,” “Explorer,” or “Unplugged”, and track progress.
Design Your Own Badge System: Make printable or digital badges for things like: Sunset Views, Book Completions, or Little Moments of Joy. Celebrate when you earn one and don’t forget to level up when you collect a full set.
Streaks for Momentum: Whether it’s journaling, movement, or reaching out to a friend, track streaks with simple marks on a calendar. The longer the streak, the more motivation builds. Bonus: let yourself reset a streak once. It keeps perfectionism from killing the game.
Use the Power-Up Principle: What makes you feel more energized? Time outside, dancing, laughter, naps. Label those your “power-ups” and use them when you need a mid-game boost.
Design a Summer Gameboard: Make a visual tracker that looks like a game map. Each space is a challenge, action, or experience. Work your way through the board by Labor Day or roll the dice each week to see what’s next.
This approach blends structure and play creating the kind of balance we need more of.
Your Turn
What’s one habit or ritual you want to build a streak around this summer?
If you could earn a badge for something you’re proud of this season, what would it be?
What’s your favorite “power-up” that instantly boosts your mood or momentum?
