The term “cycle” in gaming refers to a repeating sequence or loop of actions.
This concept keeps players engaged by providing a rhythm or routine.
The repetitive actions can be learned and mastered over time.
Cycles can be short or long, simple or complex.
They provide a sense of progress and deliver satisfaction.
A well-designed cycle provides rewards, clear goals, and a sense of accomplishment.
It also introduces variety and challenges over time to keep the experience fresh and exciting.
Most game cycles have 3 elements – Action, Feedback, and Iteration.
Action is the task the player performs.
Feedback is the response to the action such as rewards, information or consequences.
Iteration is when the cycle is repeated, often with slight variation or increased difficulty.
My Perspective
This same approach can be applied in our lives to create habits and achieve goals.
Just like in a game, our growth in life often involves repetitive actions, feedback, and iterations.
We can use these cycles to create sustainable habits that lead to long-term success.
We can identify actions (habits) that will drive growth.
These actions should be meaningful and aligned with our long-term goals.
Game cycles start small and manageable, we should do the same.
Simple actions that can be easily accomplished.
As confidence and momentum grows, we can iterate to add complexity.
This keeps us engaged and pushes us to explore the boundaries of what we can accomplish.
Along the way, tracking our progress allows us to see our results and reward ourselves.
Your Turn
What cycles are part of your life right now?
Is there another you could add that would move you closer to your goals?
Do any of your current cycles need to iterate & have complexity added?
