Yesterday, we covered the shift in language to change things you want to do from verbs to nouns.

Instead of “I want to run more” you say, “I am a runner”.  The subtle change is to shift your identity into that of a runner which will increase the likelihood that you actually run.

I heard another idea in this same category.  This time, the verb shifts from “I want” to “I will”.

My Perspective

These two tips could be used together to achieve multiple wants.

First, shift to the noun:

I am a runner.  I am a writer. I am an engaged parent. I am a strong co-worker. Etc.

Once you identify yourself as aligned with the goal you want to achieve you are on your way.

This is where the shift from “want” to “will” might come into play.

Let’s say you already identify yourself as a writer. You write about 1000 words every day.  You want to increase your daily writing count to 1500 words.

Instead of saying “I want to start writing 1500 words”, shift the internal dialogue to say “I will write 1500 words today”.

The word “want” gives you an out for not doing the thing you want to do.

An unexpected call/meeting.

Other work that took longer than you thought.

The list of excuses can go on.

Using the word “will” turns the wish into a priority.

Your Turn

Do you struggle to make the things you want to do a priority?

What small step toward your “want” could you take today?

Turn that small step into “I will _____” and see what happens!
