Today (April 20th) is Get to Know Your Customers Day.

This day occurs once a quarter on the third Thursday of each quarter.

This is a day when businesses are reminded to reach out to their customers and ask questions.

You can find out what they need.

Do they like your product or service?

Could you do something new or better?

What would they want to make sure you don’t change?

Your customers might purchase your product in a store.

They might be another business.

No matter where you find them the questions are equally valuable.

My Perspective – Find Your Customers

While this makes sense for a business, I also think it makes sense at the individual level.

We can think about our daily customers. Who are the people that take the work we do and consume it or shape it in some way to deliver to another end customer.  Here are just a few examples:

Making dinner for someone – they are the customer of the dinner.

Creating a strategy for a product redesign – the design team is the customer.

Designing a presentation that another person will deliver – they are the customer.

The audiences that I think are interesting to consider are our leaders, direct reports, and children.  How might we change our approach if we treated them as customers and asked some questions about how we could be better in our role.

Your Turn

Who within your organization or at home do you serve?

What might they need from you to be at their best?

Which customer will you focus on today to get some insight on how you could show up at your best?
