This week, I heard the phrase “doing vs. being” brought up a couple of times and the topic seemed a fitting way to end the week that started with a review of Gretchen Rubin’s new book Life in Five Senses.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the endless pursuit of doing.

We measure our success by our productivity and accomplishments.

Which often leads to stress and overwhelm.

Amidst the chaos, there is wisdom in the art of being.

The concept urges us to pause, reflect, and embrace the present moment.

The benefits of being include increased self-awareness, improved mental well-being, stronger relationships, and providing the space to unleash creativity.

While the benefits sound wonderful, the path to get there isn’t easy.

Some techniques that help along the journey include setting boundaries, embracing stillness, and practicing self-compassion.

Simply noticing your five senses using ideas from Life in Five Senses could be the perfect first step on the path to a better balance between doing and being.

My Story

I began the journey to make shifts from doing to being back in 2015.

That year, I started choosing a word to guide my intentions for the year.

The word I selected was “present” – to be more present in all areas of my life.

That went well, but there was still work to be done.

The next year the word – mindful – followed the same path.

I’m still working on techniques to turn off my constant “doing” mind and just “be”.

The Life in Five Senses book was another great reminder filled with ideas.

Your Turn

Is your balance between doing and being where you want it to be?

What could you do to be more intentional about spending time just being?

Can you find a few minutes today to just be?
