Many of us have mixed emotions about the term “personal brand”.

We may like the idea of becoming known for something.

Re-enforcing our positive reputation.

And expressing our unique difference.

At the same time, we may fear being seen as fake or inauthentic.

We worry that we might box ourselves into a specific role or industry.

Or, that our brand might not resonate.

While the concerns are there, I don’t believe this is a reason not to build your brand.

In fact, even with no focus, there is a reputation (your brand) that people identify with you.

My perspective is that we should work to ensure our true qualities shine in that reputation.

How Can Your Brand Work for You?

Our brands are working for us when they are authentic to our strengths, values, and goals.

When this happens, we are positioned to attract opportunities and connections that are aligned.

Because we aren’t defined by “just one thing” our personal brands will grow as our career evolves.

How Your Brand Can Work Against You

In contrast, if our brand is misaligned to who we are, this can lead to missed opportunities.

Trying to live up to a persona that doesn’t fit who we are quickly leads to burnout.

Being true to our strengths and unique difference keeps us on course.

Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them

As we start to work on our personal brands, here are three pitfalls to consider.

  • Overcomplicating: Keep it clear and focused. Avoid trying to be all things to all people.
  • Being Inauthentic: Don’t focus on trends or expectations that don’t align with who you are.
  • Failing to Evolve: Regularly revisit your brand to ensure it reflects where you are now.

“Your personal brand is a living, breathing representation of who you are and what you stand for. Make sure it’s opening doors for you, not closing them. Take the first step today by auditing how you show up online and aligning it with your goals and your unique difference.” – Lori Sullivan
