In 2022, Occupational Scientist Ann Wilcock wrote a paper that suggested:

“We are all in a constant loop of being, doing, and becoming.”

Her work also including a 4th element – belonging, that was explored further here.

The framework suggests that health stems from engaging in purposeful action (doing), self-reflection (being), personal growth (becoming), and social connection (belonging).

These four create a cycle that is constantly in motion in our daily lives.

  • Doing (Participation): Engaging in meaningful, active occupations and acquiring skills.
  • Being (Identity): Reflecting on who one is, self-regard, and authentic existence.
  • Becoming (Transformation): The continuous process of growth and development.
  • Belonging (Connection): A sense of connectedness to people, places, & communities

My Perspective

Based on my own research, this structure clicks.

I’ve seen how people can become consumed with doing and forget the other three.

Others tie their being so tightly to titles that a loss of one is devastating.

We get so busy with our lives that we don’t see we are (or should be) in a transformation.

And, importantly, since the pandemic many are still not back to prior levels of belonging.

Taking pause each month or quarter to check in with these four areas could be insightful.

Reflecting on which are strongest and which ones might need a little nurturing.

Having the four actively engaged is the path to a healthy life.

Your Turn

Does this framework connect with you?

Which of the four areas are the strongest in your life right now? The weakest?

What could you do today to create an intentional plan for all four?
