I heard a podcast where there was a discussion of the difference between design and art.

The POV was that design is for a client and art doesn’t have to be for anyone.

That got me thinking about how we approach our work.

Specifically, I wondered if an artist starts to sell their work to clients, does it turn into design?

This question had me searching the internet for definitions and connections.

In the mix, craft popped up.

The connection that I really enjoyed was found here.

“I like to think of it all this way – Design originates in imagination (mind), Craft originates in the human hand (body) and Art originates in emotions (heart).” – Natesh Subhedar

Later in the article, there is a graphic that shifts art from the heart to the soul.

There are also descriptions of how two or all three dimensions work together.

My Perspective

When we are at work, design and craft likely take the lead.

We focus our imagination on the client and the needs of the project.

When we are doing something purely for ourselves, the activity is more likely art or craft.

We all have elements of art, design, and craft within us.

Exploring where we connect provides insight into our creativity.

For me, I lead with design – using my imagination to deliver for a client.

Craft comes second as I enjoy engaging in photography, scrapbooks, upcycling, and more.

Tapping into art – the deep, emotional work of the soul – is the most challenging for me.

Your Turn

What do you think of the definition here?

Do you leverage design, craft, and/or art in your life on a regular basis?

Which of the three comes most naturally to you?
