I listened to a podcast yesterday that spoke of many benefits of cleaning.
One offhand mention was that cleaning is a form of meditation.
Completing a repetitive cleaning task in quiet and stillness has the same potential benefits as a more traditional form of meditation.
Three elements of cleaning meditation include being mindful, intentional, and grateful.
My Perspective
There are many household chores that could give way to meditation.
As I look back, there are three activities that have been meditative for me:
Ironing – Back in the day when this was a weekly activity, I found the sessions to be a relaxing break from the hustle of the day.
Sweeping – With a broom or a vacuum, inside or outside, sweeping up dust and dirt is both relaxing and satisfying.
Chopping Vegetables – The chopping part of meal prep is another place where I can get lost in the activity and connect with my inner self.
The other thing I love about these three activities is that I see immediate results for my work.
This makes these moments both grounding and productive.
Your Turn
Have you ever done a chore with the purpose of mindful meditation?
Which activities would you put in your top 3 list of chores you find relaxing & satisfying?
How could you plan some of these chores into your everyday life – not just weekend “chore time”?
