With the membership launching, I’m learning a lot about what MeEO means to others.
One question that has come up is “can I be a MeEO if I work within a company?”.
The answer is a resounding “YES”!
Each and every one of us is a MeEO…or has the potential to bring it out in ourselves.
Here are 10 ways employees within a company become a MeEO.
The first 5 are focused on work and the second 5 are things that help you bring your best to work.
5 Areas to Focus at Work
- Know Your Strengths: Dedicate the time to understanding, really understanding your strengths and unique differences. Knowing these and leveraging them at work will help others see your gifts. This will lead to future success.
- Find Space: You will never be “caught up” at work (or at home). Face this face and intentionally create time in your days for deep work and creativity. You will start to find that saying no and doing less (of the unnecessary) will make you more productive and creative.
- Have a Learning Plan: We all have a list of things we should know more about. Each month, have a plan for how you will learn a bit more about a process, tool, technique, technology, trend or something else. What one area do you want to uplevel right now?
- Act with Intention: Don’t mindlessly follow what the calendar of the day says. Consider the work to be done, priorities for your time, and adjust accordingly. Know the projects where you will provide the most value and ensure they get your attention.
- Connect Broadly: Expand your professional network. Look for peers at other companies you don’t compete with. Find people in your industry to challenge and inspire you. Bring those challenges and ideas back to your team and your work. This will make you stronger.
5 Areas Outside of Work
- Understand and Manage Energy: Start to recognize and understand how your personal energy peaks and falls throughout the day. Which tasks are best at which times? Use this information to plan your days and ensure you get the sleep you need at night to recharge.
- Create Schedules: While schedule might not be the right word for you, create ways to manage your life outside of work in a rhythm. Strive to avoid the overflowing to-do list that causes underlying stress throughout your day. Home burdens come to work with us.
- Make an Insurance Plan: You love your job and the company. However, you never know what might be around the corner. Be prepared just in case. You are the only one who is protecting your life outside of work.
- Discover (Re-discover) Joy: When we are young, there are often many things that bring us joy. From friendships, to hobbies, to a simple day outdoors. As we grow older, we forget what brings us joy and even when the moments happen, we can miss them because we are “too busy”. Slow down, rediscover, and notice what really brings you joy.
- Relax: Really relax. Find a day (or at least ½ day) every week to relax and enjoy life. Related…when you are on vacation, take the vacation.
