This week, we’ve been covering the topics of agency and autonomy in our lives.
The focus today is how these qualities impact our work and how we can maximize.
Autonomy
We will start with autonomy – the size of the invisible box that defines our ability to make decisions and take actions based on our experience, beliefs, and values.
The size of our invisible box at work can be the fabric of the company culture and is also impacted by your leadership, your peers, and your team.
All the people around you are likely dealing with their own desire for autonomy and sometimes their desire for control.
The more others control the role, the project, the presentation, the meeting, the hours you work, where you work, and more the smaller your invisible box can become.
Considering your current level of autonomy, what do you think?
Are you happy with the level?
If the answers are negative, it might be time to explore why and see if it may be time for a change.
Agency
Once we understand our autonomy, we can work on our agency to act independently and make choices within the boundaries of the invisible box.
There are five qualities that we can work on to continue to expand & exercise our agency:
Empowerment: This is the belief in our ability to make a difference and shape circumstances. Empowerment comes from recognizing our capabilities, strengths, and rights.
Assertiveness: This one is a challenge for many. Agency involves the capacity to assert oneself and communicate needs and boundaries effectively. Assertive individuals advocate for their interests without being passive or aggressive, which is essential for taking charge of our lives.
Goal setting: Setting and working towards personal goals is a sign of agency. Individuals with agency have a sense of purpose and direction, actively striving to achieve their aspirations. They take proactive steps to create the life they envision.
Self-efficacy: The belief in our ability to achieve goals and overcome challenges. Self-efficacy allows us to take the initiative, persevere in the face of obstacles, and pursue ambitious endeavors.
Ownership of choices: This involves acknowledging the consequences—both positive and negative—of decisions and learning from them. Owning choices reinforces personal responsibility.
